I spent half of 2007 working away in Germany. It was my first experience of living in a foreign country, and I loved it.

The rent on my flat was €600 a month, the commute to work 10 minutes by bicycle and everything the city of Frankfurt could offer was a walk away.

When compared to living in zone 6 of London it was what I actually call 'city living'. I've lived on the outskirts of London my whole life and commuted in. Being able to afford to live walking distance away from a city centre was something I'd never considered, it was always outside my level of affordability.

2007 was also the year I decided I needed to work for myself. I wanted to become self reliant; I'd seen far too many people's careers develop based upon the whims of employers. If I was going to train myself, I was going to be the one to benefit.
